Living in The Villages means enjoying beautiful weather and a vibrant community with wonderful neighbors. However, as you already well know, our humid climate can present unique challenges when it comes to keeping homes clean. Here are some things aka “hacks” to help you maintain a spotless home in Florida’s humidity:
1. Dehumidify Regularly
There are many wonderful benefits to using a high quality dehumidifier on a regular basis. A good unit can reduce the overall humidity in your home, especially in areas prone to moisture such as bathrooms (and while not commonly found in The Villages, basements). Reducing moisture levels can make it harder for mold and mildew to grow. Proper use of a dehumidifier is important though as overuse can cause health concerns if the air is too dry due to overuse. We recommend following your unit’s guide for proper usage.
2. Vinegar
We love vinegar, even if the smell takes some getting used to (the smell quickly goes away – that’s the great news!). Vinegar is a natural deodorizer and disinfectant. Aside from doing a wonderful job on hardwood floors,it can disrupt the growth of a wide range of fungi and other microorganisms. To use, mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle to clean surfaces, window sills, refrigerator and freezer sills, window locks and frames, and edges around windows. It can and should also be used in tile grouting in bathrooms.
3. Baking Soda
Most people know that baking soda helps reduce odors in places such as bathrooms, inside of refrigerators, and pantry shelves. But did you know that it can also help control mold, naturally? That is because it reduces excess moisture from the air and it controls the PH levels in the home. To use, simply mix equal parts with water, wear gloves (always recommended!) and use a spray bottle to clean surfaces.
4. Squeegee Your Shower
Want to keep your shower stall looking as bright and fresh as when we, The Villages Maid Service, came to clean? You can do that! Our favorite method is to use a squeegee to remove excess water from your shower / bathtub walls and glass door shower enclosures. This easy habit takes less than 30 seconds and not only keeps your shower glass doors looking brand new, hard water free, it also significantly prevents mold growth.
5. Use Moisture-Absorbing Products
Using products such as silica gel packets or activated charcoal in drawers, closets, and storage areas (especially in areas such as under sinks), can soak up excess moisture which not only helps prevent unwanted odors, it can reduce mold growth.
6. Clean Your AC Filters Regularly
Dirty AC filters are not only unsightly, they can cause a few issues. Due to restricted air flow, they can cause your AC unit to not work as efficiently as it could with a clean filter and vent. It can also reduce air quality. By changing your air filters every six months and cleaning the vents, your home’s humidity levels are instantly improved.
7. Microfiber Cloths Are Your Friend
When cleaning, you don’t want to use any ole type of towel. Microfiber is best! They are excellent at trapping microorganisms, dust, and debris, all while not having to use cleaning products. Their fibers are woven so tightly that they trap the unseen which makes them the perfect cleaning tool for Florida’s humid environment.
By incorporating these cleaning hacks into your routine, you’ll find it easier to maintain a fresh, clean home despite Florida’s humidity. Remember, consistency is key in battling the effects of our climate.
